This paper presents a channel model for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems in the presence of three-dimensional (3-D) scattering. The model combines improved sum-of-sinusoids simulation models proposed for Rayleigh fading channels, and the two-dimensional (2-D) models proposed for MIMO systems, in a 3-D scattering environment. The distribution of 3-D scattering is assumed to be uniform in horizontal plane and Gaussian in the elevated plane. Simulation results showed that the new model satisfies the desired statistics with less Doppler spread, and hence can be used to generate independent fading channels for MIMO systems. The generated channels can be further processed to obtain correlated MIMO channels through the exploitation of correlation matrices at the transmit and receive sides. The resultant channel can then be used to simulate MIMO systems for a better system performance prediction.
