Relationship Between Periodontitis & Taurine Levels in the Aging Population

Özet
Aim: The aim of this study was to assess Taurine levels in the saliva and serum of both periodontitis and periodontally healthy aging populations, comparing them with levels observed in a younger population.
Method: The study included a total of 66 systemically healthy individuals separated into four groups: Periodontally healthy +65 years old individuals (Group A; n=12, 69 ± 3,33 years), Stage III Grade B Periodontitis +65 years old individuals (Group B; n=17, mean age: 68 ± 1,81 years ), Periodontally healthy 25-44 years old individuals (Group C; n=18, mean age: 27 ± 4,27 years) & Stage III Grade B Periodontitis 25-44 years old individuals (Group D; n=19, mean age: 32 ± 5,99 years). Clinical periodontal parameters (Plaque index (PI), pocket probing depth (PPD), gingival recession (GR), clinical attachment loss (CAL), and bleeding on probing (BOP)) and saliva flow rates were recorded. Salivary and serum Taurine, TNF-α & SIRT1 levels were evaluated using Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits.
Results: Taurine & SIRT1 levels in Group B were statistically significantly lower than the other groups (p<0.05). While TNF-α were statistically significantly higher in group B & group D compared to group A and group C (p<0.05). Clinical periodontal parameters in group B & group D were statistically significantly higher than the other groups (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Results demonstrates that serum & salivary concentrations of Taurine were associated with aging and periodontitis. This study suggests that serum and salivary Taurine levels could reflect the biological aging process of the body beside indicating immune activation levels.
