Özet
Inflectional morphemes change the grammatical function of the words to which they are attached. Together with syntax, inflectional morphology forms part of a speaker's grammatical competence, encompassing the principles that govern the structure of words, phrases and sentences. Employing functional magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography, neuroimaging research has explored inflectional morphology. The purpose of this line of research is not only to reveal the neural bases of inflectional morphology, but also to test various psycholinguistic and neurobiological accounts on the nature of the mental lexicon and on language in general. This chapter provides an overview of the neuroimaging findings on the neural bases of inflectional morphology and how they relate to psycholinguistic and neurobiological accounts of language.
