Introduction: To find out national cancer incidence for major cancer sites in Turkey, estimation was carried out by analyzing a set of sex and site-specific incidence ratios, obtained from the population-based cancer registry by Department of Cancer of Ministry of Health. The annual incidence of all cancer cases increased gradually, being 49.29 per 100.000 population in 2000, 60.49 in 2001, 70.24 in 2002 and 70.32 in 2003. Among males the most frequent cancers were those of the lung, stomach and prostate. The incidence rates of urinary cancers among males were 14.01, 13.73 and 3.29 per 100.000 for prostate, bladder and kidney-renal pelvis consequently. In the absence of national population-based qualified cancer registry data, estimates of incidence provide valuable information at national level. Questioning the reliability of the data, an attempt was made to compare this data with that in the literature.
