Media Representation and Public Perception of War, IGI Global, ss.231-282, 2025
With the rise of digitalisation and the network society, diaspora activities involving identity, belonging, culture, and politics have gained significance. Digital diasporas use advanced communication tools to raise global awareness of humanitarian crises, war crimes, and hybrid warfare, despite physical distance. This study explores how such diasporas influence war narratives, focusing on Syrian and Ukrainian digital activism via Twitter (X). It analyses key accounts during major conflict events, identifying four main themes: diaspora activism, narrative construction, trauma and resistance, and international engagement. Findings show Ukrainian digital activism is more structured, while Syrian activism highlights violence and international roles. Though they don’t directly foster peace, digital diasporas shape narratives and deserve further study for their strategic potential.
