Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) plays a crucial role in managing chronic pulmonary disorders by aiming to alleviate symptoms and enhance patients' functional abilities. Although it is primarily utilized for treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, PR is now being used to address a variety of respiratory disorders. This comprehensive approach includes referral, evaluation, exercise training, and interdisciplinary education. A recent addition to PR is the use of heliox, a mixture of helium and oxygen. Due to its lower density, heliox allows for smoother gas passage through the airways, reducing resistance and the work of breathing. This results in improved exercise performance, endurance, and peripheral muscle oxygenation, particularly in severe cases where exercise tolerance is significantly reduced. However, despite its positive outcomes, there are challenges related to heliox delivery techniques and costs. Heliox serves as a temporary aid, providing relief while conventional medications take full effect. Integrating heliox into PR, especially for patients with severe illness and limited exercise tolerance, has the potential to improve outcomes. Balancing its benefits against its limitations, and combining heliox with established treatments positions it as a valuable tool for improving the effectiveness of PR in chronic respiratory disorders.
