Özet

Purpose: Conviction and sedentary life style effects quality of life in female prisoners. The purpose of this study was to compare women prisoners and community dwelling women in terms of quality of life, hip-knee osteoarthritis and balance. Methods: A sum of 114 women (54 were prisoners) participated in this study. The SF-36 and WOMAC scales were filled by the participants. 'Sharpened-Rhomberg' and 'One-Leg-Stance' tests were applied for static balance. '15-step forward tandem gait test' and '15-step backward tandem gait test' on a line was applied for dynamic balance. Results: There was significant difference between the groups with regards to foot deformity, smoking habit and number of prisoner family members (p<0.05). As for the values of waist circumference, age, body weight, body mass index, medication, operational status and education status there was no significant difference between the groups (p>0.05). When quality of life and osteoarthritis values of the two groups were compared, the prisoner group's results were significantly lower than the control group (p<0.05). Balance values of the two groups showed no significant difference (p>0.05). Conclusion: Female prisoners' quality of life and hip-knee osteoarthritis status was highly affected from conviction but balance status was not affected. In conclusion, in prison the time spent for exercise and sport should be increased and employment of physiotherapists to apply early and preventive physical therapy to avoid chronic diseases should be undertaken.
