Educating for Sustainable Futures: The Role of Turkish Architecture Curricula in Advancing the UN SDGs

Özet
This study investigates the extent to which architecture departments in Turkish universities specifically those accredited by the MiAK-MAK (Architectural Accreditation Board) contribute to the achievement of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As universities worldwide increasingly align their strategies with the SDG framework, understanding the specific role of academic programs, such as architecture, become crucial for fostering sustainability and addressing global challenges.
The research focuses on the curricular content of all accredited architecture programs in Turkey, aiming to assess the relative weight of architectural courses in relation to the broader SDG commitments of each institution. Through a detailed mapping of course offerings, pedagogical approaches, and institutional sustainability strategies, the study evaluates how architectural education supports specific SDG targets. Special attention is given to critical themes such as climate-responsive design, energy efficiency, sustainable materials, social equity, and interdisciplinary collaboration, which are central to achieving sustainable development in the built environment. Ultimately, this research aims to position architectural education as a more evidence-based, strategic, and effective driver of sustainable development, supporting the advancement of the architecture profession and helping institutions fulfill their sustainability commitments in Turkey and beyond.
