Özet
Hikikomori, first identified in Japan, refers to an individual’s prolonged social withdrawal and has increasingly been observed across different societies. In Türkiye, academic interest in this phenomenon is relatively recent, with the first studies appearing in 2017. This study reviews the overall landscape of academic research on hikikomori conducted in Türkiye. The literature includes scale adaptation studies designed to assess hikikomori tendencies, case reports, and research examining its associations with various psychosocial factors. While scale adaptations contribute to the measurability of the concept, case studies reveal that hikikomori is not confined to Japan and may represent a cross-cultural syndrome. Sociocultural and theoretical works discuss the phenomenon in relation to digitalization, social media use, gender roles, and family dynamics. Studies focusing on adolescents have also explored risk factors such as problematic internet and gaming behavior, parental attitudes, and identity development. Overall, findings indicate that hikikomori research in Türkiye is still in a developmental phase; longitudinal studies, large-sample research, analyses of sociodemographic differences, and experimental designs remain limited. Therefore, it is recommended to expand academic research on hikikomori through interdisciplinary collaboration and to strengthen public awareness of this emerging social and psychological phenomenon.
