Özet
This chapter explores how generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools can be systematically integrated into materials development and adaptation for second or foreign language (L2) learning. Grounded in established theoretical perspectives on teaching language skills, materials development, and educational psychology, the chapter offers hands-on applications demonstrating how AI can be used to generate and adapt instructional materials. The chapter focuses on core L2 skills, that is, reading and listening, and key subsystems, namely, vocabulary and grammar, while also highlighting the role of cross-skill activities including speaking and writing as complementary components of instructional design. It demonstrates how AI can be used to support materials adaptation through three key techniques: adding, modifying, and simplifying. These technical procedures are further examined in close relation to psychological factors central to effective learning, namely, emotional engagement, cognitive engagement, and personalization. Drawing on frameworks such as focus on form, control-value theory of achievement emotions, and psychological conditions for vocabulary learning, the chapter provides practical examples of AI-assisted tasks, prompts, and activities that foster meaningful engagement with language input. The chapter argues that, when used critically and pedagogically, generative AI can enhance the flexibility, relevance, and learner-centeredness of instructional materials while reducing teachers’ workload.
